PARFUMS DELRAE
DELRAE ROTH CREATES PERFUMES IN PARIS IN COLLABORATION WITH MICHEL ROUDNITSKA, ONE OF THE MOST RENOWNED, INDEPENDENT PERFUMERS IN THE WORLD.
San Francisco, CA - DelRae Roth recently completed a two year collaboration
with Michel Roudnitska, son of Edmond Roudnitska, known in the business as « the father of modern perfumery. » The result of their work is the birth of three distinct and extraordinary fragrances, inspired by San Francisco and created in the classic, French tradition. Roth, a porcelain-skinned beauty and successful San Francisco graphic design-er, followed a childhood dream. « I was the little girl who saved money to buy cologne instead of dolls. Some people love discovering a new wine or a great restaurant, but for me discovering a new perfume has always been my passion. » Drawing from her background in design and image development. Roth knew she would be able to expertly package a product. All she needed was a master perfumer - someone to help her develop her ideas of a delicious fragrance into a finished and refined perfume.« I have always had tremendous respect for the artisan approach and wanted my
perfumes to be crafted in this way, reflecting the passion that people bring to any artistic endeavor, » says Roth. With her unwavering eye for quality, Roth chose Michel Roudnitska, a member
of one of the most distinguished perfume families in France. The Roudnitskas created some of the great, classic perfumes, including « Eau de Hermes for Hermes; « Eau Sauvage, » « Diorella » and Diorissimo » for Dior; and « Femme » for Rochas. Roth comments, « The perfume world is dominated by four or five huge companies, and I didnt think the quality was always there. I also knew that some of the hype wasnt based in reality. I was convinced that it was still possible to create a perfume of integrity using the very best ingredients, and that there were sophisticated women who would appreciate this sort of independent, quality-driven effort. »« After I met with Michel in Grasse, I knew without hesitation that he was the
perfect perfumer to work with. He shared my sensibilities, respected my commitment and knowledge, and had access to the best ingredients in the world. »Roth spent two years going back and forth between San Francisco, Grasse and Paris. Michel Roudnitska came to San Francisco to smell certain elements that Roth felt were important to her fragrances - certain trees and aromatic plants
that grow in the City and surrounding areas. After a two year collaboration, the compositions were completed. Parfums DelRae will make its debut this November. A perfectionist. Roth wanted unquestionable integrity in her perfumes. This consistency of vision is reflected in the elegant, timeless packaging, which Roth designed and directed. The labels on the perfume bottles and boxes are all engraved on hand made papers from the oldest paper making machine in Europe that is still operation. « I envisioned perfumes, without compromise, of true authenticity, independence and inspiration, » exclaims DelRae Roth. « These are perfumes for people who recognize and appreciate the uniquely beautiful, who gravitate towards the exceptional, and who recognize the transforming power of beauty in their lives. » Enthralled with the art of making perfume, Roth has a name and concept for her fourth fragrance, which she expects to complete in 2003. Parfums DelRae are available at two specialty boutiques in San Francisco - De Vera on Maiden Lane, and Diana Slavin on Claude Lane and also at Tail of the Yak in Berkeley, at Takashimaya in New York City and at Fred Segal in Santa Monica, with additional orders coming in from these two cities as well as some of the best boutiques in Atlanta, Chicago, Minneapolis, Dallas, Seattle and Portland.« As a designer, Ive had the opportunity to work with some extremely talented
and demanding clients. I know from this experience the importance and power of having a vision of what your product is and what it can be. When you have this clarity and passion, you insist on quality and you strive to surround yourself with people who are likeminded. This value becomes an inherent part of the process, and finally of your product. And people always respond to that. » DelRae Roth has worked in the design profession for the last 25 years. At the renowned San Francisco design studio, Casado Design, clients included Warner Brothers Records, Levi Strauss, Volvo, Herman Miller, United Vintners, Gallo and Esprit. Among her responsibilities were corporate identity and packaging. From 1984 until 1991, Roth was the art director for the San Francisco based
clothing company, Esprit. During her tenure there, the company won the prestigious « Design Leadership Award, » given each year by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). While at Esprit, Roth wrote two books showcasing the companys design philosophy, Esprits Graphic Work 1994-1996 and Esprit, The Comprehensive Design Principle. In 1995, Roth opened Atelier Graphique, a design studio that specializes in
brand identity and product development. Client list includes: Alice Waters/The Edible Schoolyard Project; Aqua and Charles Restaurants; Beringer Winery; Chronicle Books; Dell Computer; ELuxury.com; HarperCollins Publishers; Intel; Louis Vuitton/Moet Hennessey; Pacific Bell; and the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau.DelRae Roth is available for interviews.
