This is one of the
few fragrances I've worn that has elicited any comments (pro or con) from anyone. I
spritzed some of this on at work one day, proceeded to the time clock, and a lady said
"somebody REALLY smells good!" This probably happens more to ladies than to men,
but it let me know it worked well on me, at least. Orange-y, rose-y, spice-y, and
altogether a super unisex fragrance.

This FM really
surprised me. I didn't expect to like it that much. And when I first applied it, I almost
regretted putting it on: a typical woodsy/floral blend. To my nose, almost a cacophony of
notes. Rose, patchouli, mixed with too many other strong things. But within minutes it had
pulled itself together into something very, VERY appealing to me! The patchouli,
sandalwood, and rose remained, but quickly settled WAY down, revealing orange, nutmeg, and
pepper--LOTS of pepper. I just happen to LOVE pepper. This fragrance is very potent, you
don't need very much. The orange/pepper phase lasts several hours for me, and really
warmed up a chilly, rainy day. In the drydown, beneath all the "louder" notes
there is a very quiet sweetness. I'm not sure where it comes from. Anyway, I find this
Noir Epices tremendously SEXY!! Also, although FM's are supposedly unisex, this is the
only one that smells equally wonderful on both me and my gorgeous husband. (Who, btw,
doesn't usually wear fragrances, but has been making an exception for this one-- we are
BOTH mad for it and keep smelling each other, LOL)!

i liked the orange
spice in the beginning but all that loveliness evaporated rather quickly on me. i don't
catch anything very complex about this fragrance, although it's nice in that the base
isn't an unctuous vanilla or a too-earthy something else (i feel many spicy orientals have
this problem). kind of a light spicy oriental w/ some florals. what's the big deal? =)

MUA has definitely
made me more open-minded about fragrance, and this one is exhibit A. Ordinarily just
reading the words "spicy Oriental" would have me thinking "eeeek! Opium!
get me away!" but dabbing this on my wrist makes me realize it's a fabulous
cold-weather scent. There is definite orange at the beginning, then a blast of peppery
spice, then finally a bit of a flower peeking out (to be honest, the web site says it's
rose but to me this one is just "flower") and some sandalwood to finish it off.
Not, I hasten to add, that awful head-shop sandalwood but a warm, subtle, sexy sandalwood.
A scent to wear as you sip a brandy in front of a roaring fire at your favorite winter
bar. I found this perfume bringing up a very personal memory, of my mother's tiny
miniature of Quadrille by Balenciaga. If anyone else remembers Quadrille, do let me know
if this perfume brings it back for you too ...

Revised upon
receiving another sample: A interesting oriental fragrance by Michel Roudnitska, a son and
a pupil of Edmond Roudnitska. The first note that strikes me is orange which is sweet and
sparkling. Once orange settles, pepper, clove, nutmeg appear gradually. The spice notes
rest on a resinous base of cedar and sandalwood which round off the fragrance giving a
lovely counterpoint to the warm spices. Rose which was faint in the top notes reasserts
itself in the base along with spicy geranium which appears after about 20 minutes. I do
find a composition of rich spices and lush rose lovely and alluring. Definitely a great
option for the cooler days as it has a comforting and voluptious feel.

Black Spices - yes,
it is spicy, no it's not as dark as I expected it to be. It is mostly a dry, woody scent,
with the spiciness coming out in waves, which is what I mostly like about it. It will
always remind me of Paris and its refined, little boutiques. Composition is: Top: Orange,
Rose, Geranium/ Middle: Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Clove, Pepper/ Base: Patchouli (which i don't
actually detect), Sandalwood, Cedar. Whilst in FM's boutique, I sniffed a few other
perfumes.. the only other one I liked was Cologne Bigarde, which is mostly a bitter
orange, simple scent.
