Feminine and floral
with the right balance of leather. Based on the feedback here I went and located some of
this off eBay. Just got my 5ml petit mister and this stuff is wonderful.

This is serious
business. Imagine the perfume worn by Mrs. Robinson crossed with Dagny Taggart's nighttime
fragrance (daytime would have to be something bracing like Ellena's Bigarade Concentree).
For me, this is a perfect work fragrance because it's so sophisticated, so knowing, so
power-femme -- yet also nole me tangere -- that it would give me confidence to tackle
anyone and anything because I know something he/she/it doesn't and never will! It's a
suprise to find a sophisticated fragrance that isn't at all familiar -- it's not
moss-covered or vanillic or spicefest. I think of traditional womanly fragrances like Nuit
de Noel, Mitsouko, and Femme as the height of sophistication, but Le Parfum de Therese
adds notes of deliciousness, daring, and defiant strength. You've got to try this answer
to our daydreams for yourself.

Why didn't I get
any of those delicious-sounding notes of carnal musk, chypre, and leather? That is
actually what I was hoping for when I tried this fragrance out, and instead I got pure
pepper followed by sweet, innocent Jasmine and a slightly fruity undertone. Not that I
don't like how it turned out, mind you, but I do wish it was a bit more... naughty on me.

Thanks to
japickles, I was able to sample Une Fleur de Cassie, Lipstick Rose, and Le Parfum de
Therese. Although Cassie was my favorite, this was a fairly close second! I'd rate this as
4 1/2 lippies if we had 1/2 lippies. At first, I wasn't sure that it was going to work for
me, but after about 15 minutes it developed into a rather sultry fragrance with a gorgeous
pepper note. I was surprised how much I liked the leather in this! Many here have already
covered the notes quite well, but to give you a visual, this is a well coiffed, high paid
dominatrix in a custom made Louis Vuitton leather corset.(and maybe a Hermes whip.....)

this is the third
frederic malle scent which I've purchased, the lady at the counter looked at me perplexed
as I asked for a bottle of it at the upstair counter at barney's,she said they did not
stock it with the men's scents?!so I ,although being in a hurry went downstairs to see
Marianela at the F M counter, this scent starts out a sweet fruity floral, but 15 minutes
later it becomes an animalic chypre, very dark and carnal with a hint of fruit an
jasmine,as the scent wears on it evolves and the leather notes begin to show ,the scent
becomes yet darker and sexier, this is a very androgenous and hot scent, every time I wear
it teaches me something about it's simple modern complexity...I love wearing this scent!

This is my
spring/summer signature scent .... I dearly love it. This fragrance is so complex : it is
fruity-tartish yet warm ... melon, tangerine plum layered with rose, jasmine cedar, pepper
and vetyver in such an unique combination. It is classy, yet a bit insolent. I've been
wearing this for 3 years now - I hope FM never discontinues this.

From the Frederic
Malle Website: "LE PARFUM DE THÉRÈSE (THERESES PERFUME)One of Edmond
Roudnitskas most important compositions. He created it in the 60s, when his art was
at its highest. Aesthetically too advanced for its time, Le Parfum de thérèse
was never offered to the public, despite the admiration it elicited from
colleagues. Only Thérèse, the masters wife and collaborator, could wear it. Having
become a veritable legend, this composition is making its posthumous debut. Mandarin,
Melon, Jasmine, Pepper, Violet, Rose, Plum, Nutmeg, Cedar, Vétyver, Leather. Its creator:
Edmond Roudnitska. Available in 10ml, 50ml, and 100ml sprays, as well as in body
lotion."
This review will be a work in progress as this fragrance is so complex and interesting it
merits repeated samplings and updated notes.
Started smelling, upon first spray, a bit musty, musky...perhaps the jasmine and the
labdanum? Then as it started drying down it became a bit sickly sweet, as Berry Chantilly
Cake..all sweetness, cristallized roses and violets. No leather...no animalistic
nuances..At least not yet.
It starts losing the sweetness and becoming a bit lighter, perhaps even a tad
sour....mandarin? A few hrs later and I'm detecting a faint jasmine and peppery undertone
that does not bother my nose. I'm not a fan of jasmine but this is such a controlled note
and so sophisticated that I actually enjoy it on me.
This is a fabulous scent. The price high. $168. Elegant, simple and understated bottle
too. Therese must have been a wonderful and lovely woman and she was absolutely loved by
this man. No passing fancy would be able to inspire something so beautiful!.
I'll be back...
Back:11/7/02: Wore this to see Eugene Onegin last week and I must say it was a hit. I
debated whether this scent would be appropriate for a 3 1/2 hr Opera. If it would perhaps
be too musky or strong. Seattle Opera encourages subscribers and public alike to go gently
on perfumes for their performances. Therese was lasting, not heady. Morphing on the skin
as the Opera's dramatism intensified. I even received a few compliments because of it.
Eugene Onegin was left crying on stage but Therese smiled and stayed with me till the next
day on both my skin and cashmere shawl. Excellent lasting power. Wonderful overall.

The citrus at the
opening of this perfume is a little sour-smelling for me. But the sourness fades rapidly
and as soon as the jasmine starts to emerge I'm ready to enjoy this lovely scent. I also
smell the rose and violet in the heart, but the best part is the leather that eventually
emerges behind the flowers. Most unusual and sexy. What with all the different messages I
get from this perfume - sour citrus, warm jasmine and rose, sweet violet, i-mean-business
leather - I'm betting Therese must have been a truly extraordinary woman, one I'd have
paid money to meet.

I really wanted to
love Le Parfum de Thérese, for I love its backstory (which Victoria related in her
review). And although I do love the beginning with its dry fruit notes of mandarin, plum
and melon, the combination of an animalistic jasmine and labdanum (which is often used to
lend a leathery note but which smells quite animalic on my skin), certainly lessened my
enjoyment. When confronted with my wrist and the oft-asked question, "What does this
smell like?" my ever-patient SO answered "Abrasive and musky." Oh well, at
least that's $160 or so saved.

| I like the concept
of Frederic Malle Editions de Parfums which allows parfumeurs to exercise their art and
create fragrances based on their own vision, unfettered by the design house rules. Le
Parfum de Therese was created by Edmond Roudnitska, one of the most influential
parfumeurs, the nose behind Femme by Rochas, Miss Dior, Diorella, Diorissimo and Eau
Savauge among others. Composed in the 1960s Le Parfum de Therese was worn by Mr.
Roudnitska's wife Therese. Hence the reason for the name the fragrance bears. Upon the
death of the master parfumeur in the 1990s, his wife allowed for the fragrance to be
released to the public through Frederic Malle. The fragrance itself is one of my
favourite from the collection. The burst of sunny mandarin is followed by sweetness which
reminds me of cantaloupe. A touch of warm pepper softens the sweet fruity accord before
jasmine reveals itself. It is faint at first, however it becomes deeper as the time
passes. Whilst jasmine intensifies, accords of violet and rose swirl out of the heart. The
entire composition rests on a slightly animalistic base touched by earthy notes of
vetiver. A fragrance both seductive and elegant, it unfolds gently on the skin, never
failing to surprise me. I find something new in it every time I wear it.
I also have to commend this fragrance on a lasting power as its delicate
jasmine/mandarin/leather accord has remained on my skin for the entire day and has not
failed to elicit many positive responses. I am quite thrilled by it and will definitely be
purchasing a full size bottle soon!
